Opportunity Snapshot

In this unique role you will have the opportunity to showcase both your technical expertise and your creativity to help shape solutions that will impact our entire organization. You will engage in both day-to-day tactical and long-term strategic activities, and learn new technologies (and some classic ones, too!) as you tackle a wide variety of challenges, including integrating diverse systems. Because we are a smaller shop, you won't be pigeonholed; in fact, we'll welcome your ideas and suggestions regarding all areas of IS. Not only will you join a stable organization, but you'll also contribute to a meaningful mission: helping participants in various benefit plans enjoy a better quality of life.

Your mission will be to learn our business well and develop expertise in our proprietary and vended applications. You will then leverage that knowledge to support the design and development of business solutions. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have a Bachelor's degree and at least 3 - 5 years of experience as a business analyst and familiarity with RDBMS, data modeling, and SQL Server. Just as important will be your ability to learn new things quickly and apply that learning effectively. We're looking for a professional with a sense of adventure when it comes to trying out new ideas.

Carpenters Trusts of Western Washington is a group of self-insured, self-administered multi-employer trust funds benefiting participants in western and central Washington. We are a non-profit organization. For almost 50 years we have worked to improve financial security for plan participants and their families. We offer a competitive salary, bonus potential, and generous benefits. We encourage and support our employees' efforts to achieve work/life balance.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Knowledge of and experience with MS Visio and MS Office.
  • Effective time management skills, self-motivation, and a high degree of professionalism.
  • The ability to work well in a team environment and under pressure.
  • Demonstrated good written and oral skills.
Experience with the following technologies is preferred but not required: Crystal reports, SQL Reporting Services, SQL Server, basys, Unix, UniData, AS/400, Windows, Cobol.

What's in It for You

High impact -- while this role involves maintenance and administrative functions, you will help shape the future of our IS program. For example, we'll look to you to stay abreast of emerging technologies that might benefit us. You will have the satisfaction of supporting people in achieving their career, health, and retirement dreams.

Professional growth -- we are transitioning from a proprietary development shop to a user integrator one. We don't expect you to know all the technologies we use, but expect that you'll bring a passion for learning, not only to get up to speed, but on an ongoing basis.

Work/life balance -- just as we are committed to promoting a high quality of life for our plan participants, we respect our employee's efforts to balance their career with other life obligations. Of course, as an IT professional you understand that there will be the occasional evening or weekend to access the systems without disrupting operations.

Great work environment -- while some organizations approach trust administration by focusing on the numbers, we are non-profit, which means we put a human face on everything we do. You'll find a strong collaborative culture in which people solve problems and achieve successes together. We believe that is one reason why we have many employees who have been with us more than ten years.

Excellent benefits -- after all, it's what we do! Our package includes all you would expect plus a few pleasant surprises, like 100% paid health insurance and a defined contribution retirement plan with an employer contribution.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

You will join a team supporting users across five departments here in our Seattle office. Occasionally you may work with Training Center staff around the state.

Our network is a hybrid of proprietary and vended applications. Our basic system (handling enrollment, eligibility, etc) utilizes UniData on a Unix server, we process claims on an AS/400 running DB2, and we have several homegrown Windows-based applications leveraging COBOL and Vision Files for data management. Most recently we implemented a new benefits administration system. In addition we have several smaller systems running Windows with SQL Server databases.

We'll look to you to take a proactive approach to partnering with the various department managers to understand both their short and long term needs. Your activities will fall into three main areas:
  • Business analysis, including gathering and analyzing requirements, acting as liaison between IS and the user community to develop solutions, and supporting the testing and implementation of those solutions.
  • Reporting, which will involve extracting data, creating ad-hoc and production reports, and assisting users. As you might imagine, we have a short list of requested reports waiting for you to come on board!
  • Special projects, such as integrating our systems to provide more complete information, and consolidating these diverse systems into an enterprise-wide data warehouse.

Keys to Success

We are a results-oriented IS team recognizing the seriousness and importance of our work; at the same time, we enjoy what we do and have fun in the process. To excel in this role you will:
  • Demonstrate initiative and a willingness to try new ideas (we have test systems for you to use) and avoid "paralysis by analysis."
  • Be resourceful in developing solutions that leverage our existing systems, but also speak up when you come across new technologies that might benefit us.
  • Achieve your goals independently, but also bring a collaborative, partnering approach to working with both the IS team and the user community.
  • Embrace our mission of providing stability, reliability, and security, whether it's a retirement plan or a database application.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
